[R] Tonight's dispatch from a tent at lock 20 on the Erie canal. Free camping, and we got here just before the rain. Feeling pretty good about that until we discovered that the fly's no longer waterproof. So a soggy night lies ahead, mitigated only slightly by raingear draped over the frame. This is my fault (I had been concerned about the urethane's integrity and didn't bother to treat it) and I feel terrible about it. Bonesy's being very sweet, though, and we did have a good day of riding, and at least it's warm. So it's a lesson learned and we'll dry out in the morning.
Thanks, by the way, to everyone for reading and commenting. It's nice to get those little messages every once in a while. Ride on.
is the terrain a little flatter now? Will you be able to find a place to get the material to rainproof? Stay dry!!
ReplyDeleteso hope you found proper treatment for tent. I have growing respect for Jessa's temperment. I, as a woman, can only imagine how long and dark that night was. You remember, no doubt, my horror at waking up during aMaine rainstorm w you, and Ky curled up between dad and I, sleeping so well in tent while my nose was shoved against wet, soggy, sidewall. I believe that was the night I was able to admit how much I HATED tent sleeping. Hope you are dry and as rested as possible. What an adventure.
ReplyDeleteI just googled Lock 20 Lake Erie canal system. Had no idea it was over a 500 mile operation. Wow. sounds awesome. Photos?
ReplyDeleteJust realized we should be posting to the most recent blog entry (day 4) - not to the oldest (day -1).
ReplyDeleteAnyway, we got text from Jessica tonight:
"we made it to niagara falls- we're staying on the canadian side and we decided to take tomorrow off to look around."
Jessica and Jack...What route are you taking after you leave Detroit and head up to Ludington? When do you think you will be there?

Sorry, meant Nick Can't type...Charlie
ReplyDeleteCharlie - I'm not sure how often Jessica and Nick will be able to post here. I think they are possibly almost to Michigan by now. If I speak/text with Jessica this evening, I'll ask that question and get back with you.
